First ever elbow procedure done in the Free State Province!
During April, one of our supporting orthopaedic surgeons, Dr PC Pelser, did a ground breaking procedure in Cure Day Clinic Bloemfontein. This procedure has never been done in the Free State Province before and we are proud of this innovation.
Dr PC Pelser (see photo) specialises in orthopaedic hand surgery. His modern rooms are situated in the Free State Medical Centre. He has established the only specialised hand unit in the Free State Province, called the Free State Hand Unit.
Dr Pelser performed an elbow arthroscopy in our theatres recently - a first ever for the Free State Province! This procedure is performed for conditions affecting the inside of the elbow joint such as arthritis or injury. This procedure aims to remove loose fragments of bone or cartilage after injury, to clean the joint from infection, to inspect cartilage for wear or damage, and to remove bone formation in arthritic elbows or to evaluate the ligaments of the elbow.
In this case the operation was performed to rinse blood from the joint and remove loose bone fragments which resulted after an injury. The procedure was done under general anaesthesia and a nerve block was applied. Sterile water was injected into the elbow joint, where-after a few small stab wounds were made around the elbow. An arthroscopic camera and instruments were inserted into the joint through these stab wounds. With the help of the camera, the joint was inspected, and the instruments were used to remove foreign bodies. At te same time the joint was washed out with sterile water. After the instruments were removed from the joint, the small wounds were sutured and closed and the arm placed in a sling.
After the operation the elbow needs to rest while the wounds heal but gentle movement is allowed within limits of comfort. Physiotherapy is started within two weeks after the operation to ensure good mobility of the joint and to train and strengthen the muscles.
