Dr Riël de la Bat, specialist Ophthalmologist, offers comprehensive eye care in both the anterior (front) section and posterior (back) section of the eye, which includes cataract, glaucoma and retinal surgery. He has a specific interest in the vitreo-retinal field (diseases affecting the back of the eye), including age-related macular degeneration (central vision loss caused by ageing) and diabetic retinopathy (swelling and bleeding inside the eye, caused by diabetes).
He is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Pretoria, the Medical School of the University of the Free State and the College of Medicine of South Africa. His qualifications include B Med Sci (Pret), MB ChB (Pret), Dip Ophth (SA), M Med (UFS) and FC Ophth (SA).
Dr de la Bat is a speaker at various congresses in the fields of Glaucoma and Diabetic retinopathy. He is a member of the South African Vitreo-retinal Association and the Ophthalmological Association of South Africa.
He has been working at Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic since 2010, and has recently opened Kloof Eye at Erasmuskloof’s Cure Day Clinic. The new rooms are fitted with the latest state of the art equipment from Zeiss, Germany.
